Amy Cinnamond's Blog/Anxiety/When Christmas Isn't The Same Anymore

Holding joy, grief and stress at the same time

Christmas is meant to be a time of joy, connection, and goodwill.

But if we’re honest, it can also be a time of stress, pressure, and quiet sadness-especially when it reminds us of the people who aren’t here anymore.

For me, Christmas will always be tied to my Nana Elsie.
She was the matriarch of our family. The one everyone loved.

The one who held us together without even trying.

Christmas with her felt warm, familiar, and safe. It wasn’t ever about perfection or the presents. it was about being together.

And when she died, something shifted. Christmas didn’t feel the same. The family didn’t feel the same.

And slowly, we grew apart.

I went from seeing my cousins every week…
to every few months…
to eventually every couple of years.

That’s a quiet kind of grief that doesn’t get talked about much, the grief of how things used to be.

Trying to Hold It All Together

Over the years, my sister Claire stepped into the role of trying to gather everyone together at Christmas. And honestly, she does a good job.

  • Some years it works out.
  • Some years most of us are in the same place at the same time.
  • Some years life, logistics, and reality get in the way.

And that’s Christmas for a lot of families.

High expectations.
Different dynamics.
Old memories sitting right next to new responsibilities.

Christmas is also stressful in very practical ways.

There are kids to buy for.
Bills to juggle.

And that quiet pressure to make it “special” even when the money doesn’t quite stretch.

You work your ass off to buy something that, if we’re honest, will probably be forgotten about by January.

And all of this is happening during a season that’s supposed to be about joy and peace.

No wonder so many people feel overwhelmed.

BUT...

Over the years, I’ve learned that the stress doesn’t come from Christmas itself.
It comes from:

  • Trying to meet impossible expectations of making everyone happy
  • Pushing through exhaustion and worrying about what to buy
  • Not giving ourselves permission to pause because there too much to do in so little time

When life speeds up and emotions run high, our nervous system doesn’t get a break. And when that happens, small things feel bigger, tensions rise faster, and it’s harder to stay present in the moments that actually matter.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is this:

Taking time out- especially during busy periods with high expectations, isn’t selfish.

It’s essential.

That’s why I’m such a big believer in small, intentional pauses.

Not hours of meditation.
Not disappearing and avoiding your life.
Just a few minutes to reset your system.

I created a short, guided calming audio called Take Ten To Calm for moments exactly like this.
It’s designed to:

Release the stress and anxiety from your day
Slow down your internal sense of time
Focus on what actually matters

Ten minutes can be enough to soften the edges of a stressful day and help you show up calmer, clearer, and more grounded.

Especially at Christmas.

Christmas will always carry memories both beautiful and painful.

It can remind us of those we’ve lost, the way families change, and the realities we’re navigating now.
But it doesn’t have to take over your nervous system.

If this season feels heavy, busy, or emotionally charged, I want you to know it’s okay to slow down.

It’s okay to step away for a moment. And it’s okay to support yourself through it.

Take ten minutes.

Breathe.

And give yourself some space in a season that asks a lot.

You deserve that.
