Amy Cinnamond's Blog/Anxiety/How to Overcome Fear of the Dentist with Hypnosis

For many people, going to the dentist isn’t just something they dislike—it’s something they actively avoid.

Maybe you’ve postponed appointments for months… or even years.
Not because you don’t care about your health, but because the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair brings up a wave of anxiety.

For some, it’s the sound of the drill.
For others, it’s the idea of needles.

And for many people, it’s that uncomfortable feeling of being trapped or out of control.

The frustrating part is that the longer you avoid it, the more stressful it becomes to finally go back. But the good news is that dental anxiety isn’t something you have to live with forever which means you can finally;

  • Stop replaying worst-case dental scenarios and start walking in with a calmer, steadier mind.
  • Avoid delaying treatment until small issues become bigger, pricier, more painful problems.
  • Reduce the shame of overdue appointments and replace it with a clear, manageable next step.
  • Learn what to do when the waiting room spikes panic, instead of bracing for the worst.

My Own Experience with Dental Anxiety

Hi, I’m Amy Cinnamond, a hypnotist and personal development coach, and I help people overcome stress and anxiety so they can take back control of their lives.
Interestingly, I used to have a very unusual reaction whenever I went to the dentist.

I would sit back in the chair… and start giggling uncontrollably. Not because anything was funny.

It was pure nervousness. When I was younger, anxiety often showed up as laughter.
All those emotions bubbling under the surface would come out in the most unexpected way.

But as I got older, the feeling became more serious. That familiar sense of dread before an appointment. That temptation to keep putting it off. Until, I discovered hypnosis!

Why Dental Anxiety Gets Worse Over Time

Have you ever delayed doing something difficult… only to find it became even harder the longer you left it?

That’s exactly what happens with dental anxiety. Many people start telling themselves:

“This is just how I am.”
“I’ve always been scared of the dentist.”
“It’s just part of my personality.”

But that belief can keep you stuck.

Because when you think the problem is who you are, it feels much bigger and harder to change.

In reality, dental anxiety is usually a learned response. And learned responses can be changed!

How Hypnosis Helps with Fear of the Dentist

Hypnosis works by addressing the patterns at the root of anxiety.
When you think about going to the dentist, your mind automatically creates certain mental images, memories, and expectations.

Your body then reacts to those thoughts as if the situation is a real threat. That’s why you might notice:

  • A racing heart
  • Tense muscles
  • Shallow breathing
  • A strong urge to avoid the appointment altogether

Hypnosis helps change the way your mind represents the experience.
When those internal patterns shift, your emotional response can change too.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed or panicked, many people begin to feel calm, relaxed, and in control.

Imagine Going to the Dentist Feeling Calm

When dental anxiety is resolved at the root, something powerful happens.
You no longer feel hijacked by fear.

Instead, you can:

  • Feel more in control before appointments, during treatment, and on the drive home.
  • Turn dental visits from overwhelming events into manageable routines.
  • Build the calm response your body needs, instead of the panic response it learned.
  • Learn how to return for overdue care with more confidence and less emotional exhaustion.
  • Feel calmer in the chair.

Rather than avoidance controlling your decisions, you’re back in charge.
