Amy Cinnamond's Blog/Anxiety/How Anxiety Quietly Stops You Living Fully — And How One Woman Took Her Freedom Back

“Today I Wore a Bikini in a Swimming Pool… And I Wasn’t Even Bothered.”

When this client first came to me, it was because of anxiety. Not the kind people always see on the surface, but the constant mental load that quietly follows you everywhere.

The overthinking.
The worrying.
The fear of getting things wrong.
The pressure of feeling responsible for everyone else

Originally, wearing a bikini would have felt impossible for her. Not because of the bikini itself, but because of what was happening internally.

She was so focused on other people.

What they might think.

What they might notice.

Whether they needed her.

How she could make sure everyone else was okay.

At night, she would wake up fearing she was going to die and leave the people she loved unsupported.

She worried constantly about letting people down. And honestly, this is something I see so often in people struggling with anxiety, especially health anxiety.

Beneath the fear of illness or death is often another fear entirely:

“What if I disappoint people?”
“What if I’m not there when they need me?”
“What if everything falls apart without me?"

So many people spend their lives trying to hold everyone else together while slowly abandoning themselves in the process.

And it usually comes from a positive intention.

“I’m just a caring person.”
“I like helping people.”
“I always put others first.”

And of course, those qualities are beautiful.

But somewhere along the way, many people stop asking themselves:

“What do I need?”

“What do I want?”

“How do I actually feel?”

Instead, life becomes about managing everyone else’s emotions, expectations, needs, and comfort.

As parents especially, this can become even more intense.

We feel pressure to do everything, fix everything, protect everyone, and somehow always have the answers. We want our children to feel confident, secure, and happy… yet many parents are trying to teach self-belief while barely feeling it themselves.

Sometimes we become so used to being needed that we forget we are allowed to simply exist as ourselves.

And this is why the work goes so much deeper than “just stopping anxiety.”

Hypnotherapy is not just about calming symptoms.

  • It’s about changing the relationship you have with yourself.
  • It’s about creating safety internally so you no longer need to control every external situation.
  • It’s about learning that your worth is not based on how much you do for everyone else.
  • It’s about feeling comfortable being seen.
  • Taking up space.
  • Making decisions based on yourself, not purely on what others want, need, or expect from you.

And the list goes on...and on...

As this client progressed through her programme with me, something shifted.

Instead of constantly focusing outward, she slowly started reconnecting with herself.

And from there, confidence naturally began to grow.

Not forced confidence.
Not fake confidence.

But the quiet kind that comes from no longer living in survival mode.

The kind that says:

“I can enjoy my life too.”
“I am allowed to feel free.”
“I do not need to earn my right to exist comfortably.”

And sometimes, those transformations show up in surprisingly ordinary ways, like...

  • Sleeping peacefully through the night.
  • Saying no without guilt.
  • Finally booking the holiday.
  • Speaking up.
  • Walking into a room without mentally scanning for judgement.

And sometimes…

It looks like wearing the bikini. ☀️👙

Not because the bikini matters most, but because freedom does.

Because when you stop shrinking yourself for the comfort of everyone else, you quietly give the people around you permission to do the same.

Not dimming your light so others can shine. But learning how to shine together.
