If you'd met me years ago, you probably wouldn't have thought I needed hypnosis. I looked like I had things together. I worked hard. I was reliable. I was the person people turned to when things got difficult.
From the outside, life looked pretty normal...
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation where your mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and change.
It is not sleep, and it is not being unconscious. During hypnosis, you remain aware, in control, and able to hear everything that is being said. Most people describe it as feeling very calm, focused, and deeply relaxed—similar to being absorbed in a book or drifting during a daydream.
In this state, your attention is less distracted by everyday noise and overthinking, which allows us to work more directly with the patterns behind habits, reactions, and thought processes.
Hypnosis is often used to help with things like anxiety, confidence, habits, and emotional responses because it works with the mind’s natural ability to learn and change.
You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you are always in control throughout the process.
If you can concentrate, imagine, or daydream, you can experience hypnosis.
No—you remain fully in control throughout the entire session.
You will be aware of everything that is happening and you can hear, think, and respond at any time. Most people are surprised to find they can move, speak, or open their eyes whenever they choose without any difficulty.
Hypnosis is not a state where you “switch off” or lose awareness. Instead, it’s a focused, relaxed state where your attention is guided, similar to being absorbed in a film or deeply focused on something you enjoy.
You cannot be made to say or do anything that goes against your values or wishes. In fact, your mind naturally filters suggestions, accepting only what feels relevant and appropriate to you.
Many clients actually describe the experience as feeling calm, normal, and more in control of their thoughts than usual, because they are no longer caught up in overthinking or mental noise.
If at any point you wanted to stop or change something, you can do so easily—that level of control remains with you the whole time.
There is no single “right” feeling, but most people describe it as a deeply relaxed, comfortable state where the mind feels clearer and quieter.
You are not asleep and you are not unconscious. You are simply more inwardly focused, a bit like when you are absorbed in a film or driving a familiar route and arrive without consciously thinking about every step.
People often notice:
A heavy, relaxed body feeling
A calmer, quieter mind
A sense of drifting or focusing inward
You remain aware the entire time and can come out of the experience whenever you choose.
Most people can experience hypnosis, as long as they are willing to relax and follow simple guidance.
You don’t need to “try hard” or do anything special. In fact, the more you try to force it, the harder it can feel. It works best when you simply allow yourself to follow along.
If you can focus, imagine, or daydream, you already have the ability to experience hypnosis.
Hypnosis can support a wide range of changes, including habits, anxiety, confidence, sleep, and emotional responses.
It works by helping you reach a deeply focused and relaxed state, where your attention is less caught up in overthinking and everyday mental noise. In this state, it becomes easier to work with the automatic patterns that normally drive how you think, feel, and respond.
You are not being “made” to change. Instead, hypnosis helps you respond differently to the same thoughts, feelings, or situations, so old automatic reactions begin to feel less fixed and less powerful.
Change happens as your mind starts to adopt more helpful patterns in a natural way, rather than through force or willpower alone.
Many people notice a shift within a few sessions, although this varies depending on the individual and what they are working on.
Each person's experience of hypnosis is unique, and that’s the beauty of it. At the end of your session, I’ll ask how it felt, as there’s no single answer.
Some clients describe a sensation of floating or feeling enveloped in warmth, while others simply feel deeply relaxed and aware. Many express surprise at how normal it seems, contrary to the dramatic portrayals in films.
Importantly, what happens during the session is just the beginning—what truly matters is the positive shifts that occur afterward. With continued sessions, you’ll find it easier to reach deeper states and build on your previous progress.
No. This is a common myth.
If a session were interrupted for any reason, you would either naturally return to full awareness or simply drift into a light sleep and wake up normally.
You cannot remain “trapped” in hypnosis.
People can have very different experiences with hypnosis, and it doesn’t always feel the same for everyone.
Sometimes it comes down to timing, expectations, or whether the approach used matched what that person needed at the time. For example, if someone is attending because they feel pressured rather than genuinely wanting change, they may find it harder to fully engage with the process.
It can also be influenced by things like the type of issue being worked on, the rapport with the practitioner, or simply whether the method used was the right fit for that individual.
This doesn’t mean hypnosis “doesn’t work,” but rather that like any therapeutic approach, results can vary from person to person.
In my work, I focus on tailoring each session to the individual so it feels relevant, practical, and aligned with what you actually want to change. That way, we’re working with your goals from the start, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Both terms are commonly used, and in practice they refer to very similar work.
I usually describe myself as a hypnotist, as this is the term most people recognise and search for when they are looking for help with change. However, you may also see the term hypnotherapist used within the field.
What matters most is not the title, but the outcome of the work—helping you make meaningful, lasting change in a safe and supportive way.
Hypnosis is not a medically licensed profession in the UK or many other countries, but practitioners typically train through recognised professional organisations and continue their development through ongoing training and supervision.
I am fully trained and certified in hypnosis and continue to update my skills each year to ensure my work reflects current best practice.
Your first session is slightly longer so we have time to go at a comfortable pace and make sure everything is tailored to you.
We’ll start by talking through what you want to change and what’s been going on for you. This helps me understand your experience in more detail and makes sure the session is focused on your goals.
I’ll then explain exactly how hypnosis works and what it will feel like, so you know what to expect and can feel completely at ease before we begin.
When we move into hypnosis, you’ll be guided into a relaxed, comfortable state where you remain fully aware throughout. Most people describe it as feeling calm, focused, and quite natural.
Afterwards, we’ll briefly talk through how it went and anything you noticed, and I’ll give you any simple guidance to support your progress if needed.
The aim of the first session is for you to leave feeling clearer, more relaxed, and confident about the process moving forward.
